living in langport - the townThe town of Langport - often referred to as The Gateway to the Levels - is situated where the River Yeo runs into the Parrett. Langport has an active community including the Langport Area Development Trust (LADT), which is a partner to Ecos Homes in the restoration of the warehouse. A catalyst for regenerating the town, Great Bow Yard is a prominent site at the western end of the main street of Langport, and as such presents a very important statement upon entering the town from Taunton. The site played an important role in the growth of the town as a river port, and remains of the wharf still surround the Grade II listed warehouse. This old building has an important historical past, formerly used by a firm of influential merchants 250 years ago, Stuckey and Bagehot, whose families individually and respectively went on to become founders of Stuckey's Bank, now part of Natwest Bank, and The Economist magazine. |
